Slavery in the Bahamas
What is slavery? Africans became slaves in several different ways. Describe three ways in which Africans became slaves. (10 marks) Slavery is the act or institution of which an individual is held. So therefore, that individual is a slave. A slave is someone who is held against his or her will and forced to work without pay. Slavery was present in West Africa before the Europeans went there; the only difference was that the black people were slaves to other black people. In 1493 the Portuguese claimed three islands in the Gulf of Guinea and developed African plantation slavery. The Africans were first tested for labor in tropical heat, and when they were found suitable, the first set of slaves went to Portugal and from there to the New World. After that the Portuguese dealing with African slaves changed. The first recorded transportation of African slaves to the West Indies was in 1501 but it was still too early for plantation slavery and therefore cannot be considered the beginning of the slave trade. The slave trade was carried out for approximately 300 years. It began in 1508 and ended in 1808. This marked the official beginning of the transatlantic slave trade. One way that an African might become a slave is during slave raids. A typical raid would happen in the night when all the villagers were sleeping. The village huts would be set on fire purposely by the Europeans and the villagers would run out screaming. While trying to escape they were caught and tied to a slave coffle. Those who were young and healthy were taken and those who were sickly and old were left behind. Another way that Africans would become slaves is if they had to pay off debts. If a man murdered someone, he could become a slave as a way of paying for what he did. Even if I child stole something, they could become a slave until the debt was paid off. A third way that an African could become a slave is if there was a famine. If they had plenty children, and not much food to feed them, they could put their children in another household to be fed. Their children would then have to work for their food, having no choice because they have to eat. There is many other ways that you the Africans became slaves but I only mentioned a few. Those who were captured in tribal raids were taken to the coast in a coffle and their journey from then began.

My Three Most Effective College Study Skills
College life is a new start for me. I need to change my study skills to adapt the new period of studying. As a college student, I think developing effective study skills is an excellent way to ensure that I can fully enjoy my college life. First of all, making a schedule to confirm what things I need to do and put everything in order is a good way for me to improve the learning efficiency. I try to make an ââ¬Å"everyday To-Do listâ⬠and mark important tasks on the calendar, such as preparing presentations, the deadline of essays, and the date of quizzes or examinations. It can help me know class and tasks clearly, and then I can arrange everything under control. When I complete a task, Iââ¬â¢ll tick off it. A small tick always gives me a sense of achievement. Secondly, listening to lecturers carefully in class is the most essential way. I try to take notes to record something important and underline important points in class. And I think giving eye contacts to teachers is a good way to give feedbacks to teachers and help teacher know whether youââ¬â¢ve understood or not.Actually, previewing new knowledge before class can help me understand contents of the class better. Moreover, reviewing knowledge after class; itââ¬â¢s a good way to test whether Iââ¬â¢ve grasped the knowledge or not. Last but not least, participating in extracurricular activities is an important way. Thereââ¬â¢re lots of different kinds of lectures in our college, some lectures can help me open up my mind and enlarge my knowledge, and some lectures can help me relax. And participating in the group work regularly is a good way to develop communication competence and find our own strength and weakness. Meanwhile, society club activities also are a part of the college life. In our leisure time, we can take part in activities to make more friends and relax ourselves. All in all, everyone may have their own way to study well and get higher grades. Anyway, I think these three way s are the most appropriate for me. Someone who knows how to learn efficiently is much better than someone who can get good grades. (366 words)

Answer the question below - Essay Example As described by Berbatov, Hitler had a strategic plan of achieving his goal through developing a political slogan and spirit among the Germans that absorbed everybody to act along a particular line (Murray and Allan 63-4). It is evident that Hitler and his advisors resorted to various ways of eliminating its opponents and identified subjects. The best approach was to institute the Germany army into its Nazi machinery. With the help of Propaganda and tactical incitement of the Germans against the Jews and other alleged inferior races, the Nazi army was motivated to commit widespread atrocities that are estimated to have cost about 12 million lives. Berbatovââ¬â¢s understanding of the German army operations in the battle field and concentration camps explores the source of the mass killings that revolutionized the socio-economic and political face of the world into the modern times. The greed for power and craving desire to bring new order to the world by Hitler significantly explained his relentless efforts to champion for communism through Nazi operations. Berbatove explains how the Germanââ¬â¢s were brainwashed and recruited into Nazi soldiers with one goal of restoring their lost glory in the world socio-political and economic position (Murray and Allan 65-7). This spirit of pure German blood being diluted by the Jews brought tension which explains the mass killing of people in geographic ally dispersed concentration camps and military battle against allied forces of the West, United Kingdom among others. It is therefore clear that Berbatovââ¬â¢s assertion on the significance of Nazi army on the committed crime against humanity by Hitler is true. The Battle of Atlantic gained pace after the fall of France in 1941 as the principle power in the Atlantic waters. The Germans had direct access to Atlantic waters with their well-armed and sophisticated submarines. This posed a

Perpetuating Disaster Myth through Film Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Perpetuating Disaster Myth through Film - Essay Example The table below shows the presence of these myths in the two movies. In Outbreak, the Motaba virus spreads in US after the host animal (a monkey) is illegally brought to the United States. In Contagion, the disease spreads when a single cook forgets to wash his hands after handling a pig. In both the movies, the start of the disaster is the result of inconsequential events and not a dramatic event. Thus, the first myth is not present in either of the two movies. In Outbreak, even though the virus is localized to an area, the movie focuses on the large-scale impact of the disaster and ignores smaller events. On the other hand, Contagion looks at both the large-scale impact as well as small events. Thus, the second myth is present in Outbreak but not in Contagion. In Outbreak, the disaster becomes huge because it quickly kills 150 people in a small area. Similarly, in Contagion, 26 million people die globally. In both movies, the death of a large number of people emphasizes the magnitude of the disaster. Thus, the third myth is present in both the movies. The Outbreak suggests that if people are able to predict the disaster, they can prepare for it and prevent deaths. This does not apply to Contagion in which there seems to be no way of stopping the spread of virus. Thus, the fourth myth is present in Outbreak but not in Contagion. Outbreak uses the technocratic approach to solve the problem as scientists and doctors work hard to find a cure for the disease, an anti-serum. Contagion takes a much more holistic approach to fighting the disease with scientists and administrators pooling resources to fight the disease. Thus, the fifth myth is present in Outbreak but not in Contagion. From this analysis of the two movies, we see that compared to Outbreak, Contagion presents the disaster in a more realistic way. Contagion presents data to
